This Body Was Made To Move!

About a year ago I decided 'again' to embark on a weight loss journey. This time around  my strategy involved changing my food habits, developing a workout regime and just basically adopting a healthier lifestyle. This was about 7months after  the birth of my second son,  so I still had a decent amount of pregnancy weight to get rid of.  I wasn't new to dieting, I have had my fair share of yoyo dieting pretty much for as long as I can remember. You see, I have had to watch my weight  most of life because I tend to add weight very easily, If I say much as look at a piece of cake, the calories goes straight under my skin :),  and losing it is usually a very very tough call.

Source
I have gone through several weightloss programs, where I would start a diet and exercise regime and then stop after a couple of weeks when the weights come off, so I'm no newbie to the whole yoyo dieting, work hard lose some weight and then go back to your old ways.  But I have chosen to blog about this particular experience because this is the longest I have ever been on a healthy lifestyle routine.

This was the way I looked after forcing myself into a BodyMagic girdle, January 2013

Singing....Look At me now! February 2014

Although, overall I consider this to be successful, it wasn't all  smooth sailing, I had  several periods within the year when  I neglected my routine. One of such periods was during the christmas season, I went over my daily allowed calories for the most part and excercised probably about every other week. But come January I dusted my running shoes and got back on track, this ability to pull myself together and get right back on track whenever I lost traction was one of the reasons I was able to carry on for a whole year.

Source
Personally I think its fine to let your guards down sometimes, the most important thing is to pick up where you stopped and get back on track, When you are able to do this, it becomes a lifestyle and can be easily maintained.

At first my intention was to lose some after baby weight, but it has since grown beyond a weight loss tactic and is gradually developing into a lifestyle. I have since reach my weight loss goal  but I still watch my diet and exercise at least 3 times a week, this is because my goal now is to stay fit and be healthy hopefully for the rest of my life.

source
So, why even bother to lose weight or  attempt to stay healthy and fit?

I believe we owe it first to ourselves to take care of our bodies because its the only body we would ever have and nobody can do a better job of taking care of it! And then to our creator we owe a duty to take care of whatever he blesses us with, or don't you think so? I mean if God has blessed us with healthy bodies to live in, we owe him a duty to take care of it. This is my personal opinion and I'm not about to judge anyone but I believe we appreciate God when we nurture and take care of anything he blesses us with and this includes our bodies.

Source

Now, beyond appreciating God by taking care of our bodies, we also extend this appreciation and love to our loved ones as they are usually the ones that are primarily affected when we have to deal with any sort of negative situations in our life be it health or otherwise.

On a personal level,  I'm fitter, healthier, my mind is more alert, I sleep better and clothes look, feel and sit better on my body! seriously this clothes fitting better really gives me a new high, I have had to amend most of my clothes and the feeling is awesome!

Source

My energy levels are also better, speaking about energy levels I would love to continue to run around and do sport activities with my boys well into my old age. I don't want to be that mum that cannot participate in actitivies with her kids all because I choose not to take care of my body, nah!

I am not a fitness guru or weight loss  professional, this post is just about  sharing my personal  journey and strategies in the hope that someone will benefit from it, so please consult your health care manager for profession help. So guys here is what worked for me.

Decide on what you want to achieve,  Decide to put in the work and Decide to stay committed
To be honest there is no voodoo pill out there for weight loss, if you put in the work and focus, you would get the results.  You really need to psyche yourself because wining this battle starts first in the mind.

source

Decide you really want to do it and let your mind be focused on doing it. trying to lose weight by dieting and working out is hard, i'm not going to kid you. At the initial stage, most days I didn't want to work out! but I had to really mentally condition my mind to do it even when I didn't feel like it. As time went by it became a daily routine such that I didn't feel good when I didn't work out. I believe what ever the mind sets out to do, it can achieve as long as you are willing to put in the work.

Source

If you can, get a good support system or a work out buddy to help you through the journey, this would make the journey easier and give you the much needed motivation when you don't feel motivated. I have a fantastic network of  friends and family, and I made it a point to let everyone know I was trying to get in shape, so they would some times workout with me or call me to order when I was eating more than I should be eating. I also would sometimes put up display messages on my Blackberry phone profile letting them know when I was about to work out, how long I worked out, my progress, the kind of fitness activity I was engaged in that day and in some cases what I was eating. What this did for me subconsciously, was it kept me on track because I was conscious that some of these people were interested and sort of keeping up with my progress so it indirectly kept me motivated.

My sis and I sweating it out.

Portions Portions Portions

With respect to my diet, I made little changes like replacing my consumption of white bread and whole milk with whole wheat bread and skimmed milk, and this is primarily because      I consume these food items in copious quantities, and that was it!
The  biggest change I made to my diet was in controlling my portions, and this is precisely the reason I have been able to carry on for so long, no food is off limits for me. I mean I would have a piece of cake, If I wanted some.  I always satisfied my cravings, and on instances where I overdo it, I usually  make sure I balance out the calories consumed that day such that it doesn't exceed my maximum daily allowance. This way I eat everything I craved and didn't feel deprived or like I was missing out.

Controlling my portions had a big impact on my weight loss journey, I was able to manage and measure my meals easily with the help of  Sparkpeople.  Sparkpeople is a great online tool for managing your weight, setting your weight loss target, managing your work out target and routines, and you can also customize your food preferences or build your own recipes with all its calorific content on one platform! Using sparkPeople helped me to keep a log of everything I was eating and easily adjust my meals based on my weight loss goals. On sparkpeople you can check the nutritional content of practically every food item known to man! Jollof Rice, Efo riro soup, Pounded yam, almost everything is there, and where its not available there is usually a close substitute.

Apart from spark people, I got myself this arsenal of measuring tools,  and I kept tabs of both the quantity of the food I was consuming and kept a weekly weigh in record, in which I recorded my weights and proportions.

These tools were very useful in keeping track of my portions initially, with time I got used to measuring  my food such that I could figure out the quantities easily by eye balling them,  so I didn't need to measure anymore. They were also useful for tracking my progress, which was a huge motivator in itself, because at first the weights came off really fast.

Now, Like I mentioned earlier, this is what worked for my personal journey. For some people the best approach might be to cut out certain fatty foods, or to eat only proteins  and veggies but that didn't work for me. Study yourself and decide what best suits you and your lifestyle, the most important thing is to make sure it is healthy and it is something you can keep doing hopefully for the rest of your life.

Work Out....Move That body!
I cannot over  emphasize  the importance of working out to my journey, there is no miracle to weight loss, its simple addition and substraction.  You eat too much...you add weight if you do not subtract the excess by working out, its as simple as that.  Working out is tough most times, there's always so much to do its almost impossible to fit it into a daily routine, but I made it a priority because it was very important for my journey. Beyond losing weight, there are just so many benefits obtained from putting a weekly fitness routine, too many good long term benefit that you cannot but  make the time if you really want to take back your body.

Source

In conclusion, I have lost a good amount of weight, I have dropped two full dress sizes and I'm actually lighter than I was pre pregnancy. But now, my goal has changed and I still have to peep talk myself into hitting the gym regularly. Nothing good comes easy really, we just have to remain committed and stick with it.

Its been a truly worth while journey, I love my new body  already, I love the way I feel after a good work out, nothing gives a better high than when you get those endorphins going by working out. I'm looking forward to the way I would look this time next year!

Valentines Day What And How

In doing this post I wanted to give a range of gift ideas that would be appropriate for all kinds of relationships, because I believe Valentines day, is a day to share love not just among romantic lovers but to everyone around and to ourselves.  The bible says "Love your neighbour as you love yourself" - interpreted it means your need to have a certain amount of self love in other to be able to project that love onto someone else. In other words, if you don't love yourself first,  you cannot truly love anyone. In  loving ourselves we glorify God, empower ourselves and enjoy inner peace and acceptance that help us to continue to spread love to others. I also believe you do not need to break the bank to make the day special, little thoughtful acts of love is all you need. Here are a few  ideas I came up with on how to spend the day and what to give.

WHAT TO DO

What To Do?
Go for a valentines day musical concert, for those in Nigeria there are a couple of shows lined up for the weekend. Some of these events come with dinner and drinks, which is a great way to keep your budget in check. This is a great option if you are a music lover and/or spending the day with family and friends.

You can choose to go out for dinner at a nice restaurant in town, but I reckon most places would be packed full, the way around this, especially if you are looking for a quieter option for the evening is to consider ordering in some food from your favourite restaurant. You can make this even more special by adding a few romantic touches to your home.
If the game plan is to order in and share with family or friends, then you can go get a nice movie, some games and just have a fun night filled with laughter.

Another option is for either one or all party involved to do the cooking at home. You can get great recipes of restaurant quality meals off the internet and make a two, three or even four course meals for that special someone. Do not worry about how it would turn out, your partner would appreciate the lengths you went to show your gratitude for the relationship.

Alternativly, you can get the services of a professional chef to come into your home and basically do the cooking and wait on you restaurant style :).

A great way to spend the day is to have a spa day out with your spouse, family or friends, In these day where we are constantly stressed out, this a gift that is truly thoughtful. I got a spa day out from my friend for my last birthday and I truly enjoyed it and would enjoy giving this experience to someone else, highly recommended. There is a myriad of options for this kind of activities, just do your research and think of the kind of pampering the person would love. This option is a great way to bond, de-stress, detox and connect with whoever you are sharing the experience with.

Now, if your pepper is really sleeping, (Nigerian slang for being rich), then you can fly your spouse or family and friends to some exotic destination for a fab weekend.

Gift Ideas For Him

Gift for him
In terms of gifts, I would like to believe most people love thoughtful gifts. Given, for the most part, people would give the obligatory box of chocolates, cakes etc but I personally feel its always nicer to give what the other person would truly value and appreciate. That's not to say you have to break the bank, just think of what would really come in useful and what the person would love, i.e if your friend/ spouse love to read then get them a nice book. If they love sports then get them something sporty. If music is their thing then get them something that would help them enjoy their music even better....get the drift?

Gift Ideas For Her

For Her

Now for her, girls generally love jewelry, no? please don't have a heart attack yet, something nice, thoughtful and more importantly within budget will be great. You don't want to give a gift and later regret that you spent so much, there is no joy in that kind of giving if you ask me. If she is a fashionista or just loves to stay on trend then think dainty simple jewelry, they are 'in' right now, look out for simple, understated and elegant pieces. Valentine is a very romantic time to pop the question, no pressure here, but if you've been nursing the idea and you are absolutely certain its what you want to do, then by all means go for it! trust me she would love that :).

Sporting gears are also very nice gifts, if your friend or partner is sporty or trying to keep fit/lose some weight anything to help them through the journey would be nice. Think... work out dvds, cool work out clothes, I know a hot pink running shoes will motivate me to hit the trails. A great musical gift is to get an Ipod, inscribe a personal message on it and then download all her/his favourite songs on it, any music loving person would truly love this.

Other options are handwritten notes of love or poems, Gadgets, ties or cuff links for guys and for women  beauty products, perfumes, lingerie, flowers and of course chocolates!

Now go out there and put a smile on someone's face!

We don did it!!! Liebster Award Yay!!!!

A couple of days ago Berry Dakara graciously nominated moi for this award!!!!  While I was still basking in the euphoria of being nominated, I got a second nomination for the same award from Stylefash25! So it was like a double whammy recognition. I’m super excited about being nominated for the Liebster!!!

The Liebster is basically like a cyber pat on the back for up and coming bloggers. The whole essence of the award is to recognize blogs with fewer than 200 followers that deserve a look.

So what does it mean for me you ask?

Oh no! I would not be getting a sealed envelope or a trophy…..I have this cute badge below to show for it.

Beyond getting something, sometimes just a pat on the back or a nod of the head from someone saying you are doing a fantastic job is enough. This blog has so far been a labour of love for me......to be recognized for what I enjoy......Awesome!!!

Thank you so much Berry Dakara and Stylefash25….. this means a lot to me.

So with every award there are certain rules, the  rules for the Liebster are fun, simple and varies from blog to blog ,but since Berry nominated me first, I shall comply with her rules!

My job now is to list 11 random facts about me, answer the 11 questions posted by Berry, then to nominate 11 new bloggers, who would also bask in the Liebster glow - Off we go then...

·                     I hate going to the salon, it’s so time consuming!

·                     I am scared of any living thing with feathers especially chickens. I cannot touch, much less hold one *covers face*

·                     I love shopping for clothes. During a black Friday sale I shopped from about 9pm to 10am the next morning, * hides face*. I’m one of those people that would try everything for fit and quality so I do not shop online unless its a brand I’m familiar with.

·                     I am such a huge foodie. I’m constantly researching and trying out new recipes

·                     I love travelling .The best part of flying for me is the take off!!!

5. Ask your nominees 11 questions

1.Why is your blog name what it is? My blog shares the same name as my business, when the idea to start my blog came up it was a natural progression for me.

3.What color shoes are you wearing right now? None , I'm at home and barefeet.

6. #TeamNatural, #TeamRelaxed, or #TeamItsJustHairChillOut?

Hmmm! Coincidentally I decided to go totally natural about 2 months ago. However the last time I retouched my hair was last September so my hair was already pretty much transitioning. I’m not sure how this would pan out but I had to do it because my hair line was badly damaged and I’m hoping going natural would restore it. So at the moment #TeamNatural

Hope you enjoyed reading this?

'NAIJ' The History Of Nigeria

Doing this post was quite exciting, because I felt like I had  stumbled on something really good. I don't do too many posts on movies, unless I see a really good one. I'm not your typical movie person, so the chances of coming across a good movie is slim for me. The original plan of this blog was to write about my holy trinity (Music, fashion, and food) , But  of course if I come across something interesting other than these three, I'm  always happy to share.

This movie was done in 2007, and I just saw it for the first time last night, this is understandable because the use of social media as at then was not as widespread as we have today, and as our people say in local parlance "whatever time you wake up is your morning" , for me, the most important thing is that you finally wake up.

The film was directed by Jide Olanrewaju an investment banker (yes you read right), who tells the story of Nigeria through its tumultuous transition from British Colony to an 'Independent nation' . Using a combination of previously unseen archive footage, historical documents and interviews, the film attempts to explain how Nigeria has evolved into the country it is today while emphasis was placed on the role some prominent Nigerians have played  in shaping the country into what it is now. Interestingly, the director Jide, does not have any professional training in film making , the documentary was made on his home computer over a period of 2 years.

This movie was quite a revelation for me, a lot of the information I got, were new to me, some of the big surprises of  the movie were how young military officers in their early 30's planned and executed coups in such quick succession, it was alarming! Another surprise was Biafra, I wasn't aware that the Igbos that had money in the banks were given just £20 each after the war, irrespective of the amount they had in their accounts prior to the war. I also observed that these leaders had very good diction and were very well spoken ....... It is interesting to note how this has changed over time.

The audience might be divided about the views of the director, for me, it was quite a revelation, such that it helped in trying to make sense of the various political problems Nigeria has experienced. It also throws some light on the genesis of some of the contemporary challenges facing Nigeria especially tribal, religious, political instability and corruption. Overall, the film left me feeling even more saddened about the situation in the country.

To think that the director put together this documentary without any formal training!...........great movie, good story, fairly balanced, I would say its a  must see for every Nigerian.

Check it out  HERE

Have a great week!

xoxo
